Made in Abyss Season 2 scheduled for July 2022, Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 3 in 2023

News during the past month reveal continuations of Attack on Titan: The Final Season with Part 3 and Made in Abyss with season 2.

This previous weekend saw Toonami airing the 13th and final episode of Made in Abyss’ first season. The season finale was an hour long, so to make way, Toonami only aired one episode of One Piece during the night, instead of a doubleheader that has been the case since the show returned last February.

However, there will be more Made in Abyss to come, as the show’s highly anticipated second season is already in production. Titled Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, the second season will premiere in Japan this coming July. As with the first, Sentai Filmworks has already licensed the new season and will simulcast the show on HiDive.

A new key visual has been released, featuring Riko, Reg, Nanachi, and several new characters, which you can see below.

In the meantime, fans should also check out the film, Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul, which premiered in 2020, and is presently available for streaming on HiDive and on Blu-ray. As the events of the movie are in the original manga and canon to the overall storyline, the film serves as a bridge between the events of Seasons 1 and 2.

It is unknown if Season 2 will include some kind of TV recap to the events of Dawn of the Deep Soul, similar to what we have seen with Dragon Ball Super’s Battle of Gods and Resurrection F arcs, Gundam Unicorn, Gundam: The Origin, and Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. If it doesn’t, Made in Abyss’ Toonami viewers could potentially be disenfranchised from the show’s continuity with the block opting to skip the films. This could be a similar situation to what Sword Art Online viewers are experiencing with the events of Ordinal Scale and the Progressive Films.

In addition, Spike Chunsoft and Numbskull Games are also working on a video game for the series. Titled Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness, this upcoming action RPG is scheduled for release Fall 2022 and will be available on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC through Steam.

Meanwhile, Toonami is coming down the stretch to the finale of Part 2 of Attack on Titan: The Final Season, with the English Dub of Episode 85 (or Episode 26 of Season 4) premiering this past Saturday, April 16th. This means that there will be two more episodes left to go until Toonami reaches the mid-season finale, which is scheduled to air on April 30 (barring any preemptions).

However, Attack on Titan isn’t finished just yet. Following the airing of Episode 87 of the franchise (episode 28 of Season 4) in Japan, Studio Mappa and Pony Canyon have announced that there will be a Part 3 of the fourth and final season scheduled to premiere in 2023.

A new teaser trailer and key visual were revealed, which you can see below.

Those following the manga might know that from where the anime leaves off at Episode 87, there are only 9 chapters left for MAPPA to adapt. There is much interest amongst the Attack on Titan fanbase on how MAPPA plans on adapting the series finale, especially in regards to episode count. However, the decision to make a third part has received some criticism. While many fans agree that MAPPA should be given as much time as they need to finish the season, a season that lasts over three years is quite a rarity in television. There were some rumors that Part 3 could have come in the form of a movie, however, the announcement of the continuation of the season ultimately proved these rumors false.

Toonami and Funimation (the latter presently being merged into Crunchyroll) have yet to reveal their plans regarding the English dub and U.S. broadcast of Attack on Titan’s final episodes at this time.

If you wish to see Attack on Titan and Made in Abyss return to the block for their respective sequels, continue watching the block every Saturday and send your show requests to Toonami’s Facebook page or by directly messaging Jason DeMarco on Twitter (@Clarknova1). We also recommend letting the show’s respective licensors (Crunchyroll/Funimation for Attack on Titan and Sentai Filmworks for Made in Abyss respectively) know through their respective social media outlets.
